A Legacy of Violence. Killings by Police and Repression of Protest at the Rio 2016 Olympics

Index number: AMR 19/4780/2016. Despite alerts by civil society organizations to the increased risks of human rights violations in the context of Rio 2016, neither the Brazilian authorities nor the Games’ organizers implemented the necessary measures to prevent such violations from occurring. This led to a repetition of a pattern of violations witnessed during other major sporting events hosted in the city of Rio de Janeiro, namely the Pan American Games in 2007 and the FIFA World Cup in 2014.
